Preparing your application documents

1. Complete recordsCertified long-form birth, marriage, and death certificates for every generation.
2. ApostillesFrom the Secretary of State of the state that issued each record. Federal documents, such as FBI checks, are apostilled by the U.S. Department of State.
3. TranslationsComplete Italian translations that follow your consulate's rules on certification.
4. Consistent namesResolve inconsistencies in names, dates, and places before applying. Some consulates require formal amendments.
Italy's citizenship-by-descent rules changed on March 28, 2025 (Decree-Law 36/2025, converted into Law 74/2025), and Italy's Constitutional Court upheld the new limits in April 2026. Before starting an application, check the current requirements, fees, and appointment procedures on your consulate's official website.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about consulates, travel, documents, and citizenship.

Can I choose any Italian consulate in the United States?

No. You need to contact the consulate that serves your legal place of residence. Proof of residence may include a driver's license, utility bills, or voter registration.

What is the difference between Fast It and Prenot@Mi?

Fast It is the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' online portal for consular services, used for example to register with AIRE (the registry of Italians living abroad) and to update your address. Prenot@Mi is the Ministry's system for booking consular appointments, including passport and citizenship appointments at many consulates.

Has the 2025 reform ended citizenship by descent?

Not entirely, but it now covers far fewer people. For those born abroad with another citizenship, it is generally limited to people with a parent or grandparent who holds, or held at death, only Italian citizenship, or whose Italian parent lived in Italy for two years before their birth. Applications filed or appointments confirmed by March 27, 2025 follow the previous rules. The Constitutional Court upheld these limits in Judgment 63/2026.

Which numbers should I save before traveling to Italy?

Save 112 for emergencies, the number of the U.S. Embassy or consulate serving the region you are visiting, your health or travel insurance assistance number, and a roadside assistance number if you are renting a car.

Who should I contact if I lose my U.S. passport in Italy?

Report the loss or theft to the police (Polizia di Stato or Carabinieri) and keep a copy of the report. Then contact the U.S. Embassy or consulate serving the region where you are to apply for a replacement or an emergency passport.
